West. I am a Reference Librarian at a public library in the downtown of a large urban city. From my vantage point on the East Wing Desk, I can see the public computers in front of me in a U formation. Behind the U, I see the stacks for our audiobook collection, videos, and DVDs. Since we have a shortage of pages, all of us help out with shelving as needed, which means that I go into the audiobook section to shelve or retrieve items. As I thought about doing this assignment, it occurred to me that, because I don't care for audiobooks, I never really spent any time observing in those stacks. That said, it seemed alien enough for me to want to go there. I got up and walked about 30 feet in a westerly direction to get to the audiobook stacks. Although the area looked neat and orderly, it is not at all inviting. There are no face-outs to catch your attention, nor are there benches or chairs nearby so that you would be tempted to spend a few minutes reading the covers. At the end of the fiction audiobooks, I discovered a small MP3 CD collection that I didn't even know existed. I have probably been shelving those in the wrong place up until now, and no one ever caught my error.
